CareNet Counseling Coastal Region, also known as Wilmington CareNet, is a non-profit community-based counseling ministry offering pastoral care and psychotherapy services to individuals, couples and families in Southeastern North Carolina. An affiliate of CareNet, Inc. and Wake Forest Baptist Health, our clinics are located in Wilmington, Jacksonville, Shallotte and Bolivia.

Our mission, “To renew lives by promoting psychological, emotional and spiritual health through compassionate, professional, spiritually-integrated counseling,” is supported by community, faith and business leaders within our area. Our commitment is to enhance access to counseling services for all within our communities, including those with limited capacity to pay for professional care.

Champions’ Lunch

Each year we invite our partners, and others within our community who are interested in learning about our services, to join us for an informal lunch gathering to talk about the mental health needs of our area and to discuss how we can partner with others to address those needs. Terry Tackett, MSW, LCSW
Regional Director

Terry Tackett has worked with individuals, couples and families for over 25 years. His areas of counseling include working with those struggling with anxiety, depression, stress management, relational and marital issues, divorce, pornography, phase-of-life transitions, grief and loss, anger issues and spiritual issues. Terry earned his MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Prior to joining CareNet, Terry served clients in private practice at Fredericksburg Christian Counseling Center in Virginia for over 25 years.

Terry’s schedule allows for daytime and early evening appointments Monday through Thursday at the Wilmington College Road clinic.

Paula Briedis, MA, LCMHC

Ms. Briedis has her Master of Arts degree in Christian Counseling from Western Evangelical Seminary in Portland, Oregon. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and works with individuals, couples and families. Previously she has worked as a therapist in a variety of settings, including private practice, community mental health agency, and community outreach. With over 30 years of experience,
Ms. Briedis is devoted to assisting people grow and change. Her goal is to help equip, encourage, and engage clients as they journey through difficulties they face in their lives. Bringing faith into the counseling office adds a fullness to the process of change. Her expertise covers a variety of concerns including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, life transitions, grief, relational problems, or those simply wanting to live life more fully. She also works with survivors of sexual abuse and trauma. Ms. Briedis’ schedule allows for appointments on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Jacksonville clinic.

Caryn Coons, Ph.D., MA, LCMHC

Caryn Coons is a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, whose work with Wilmington CareNet includes supporting children, adolescents and adults of any age. Her treatment specialties are trauma (with emphasis on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), ADHD and neurofeedback training. Ms. Coons earned a Ph.D. in Psychology, an MA in counseling and is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. She is also a Nationally Certified Counselor and a Diplomate in Clinical Counseling through both the American Psychotherapy Association and the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy. She has also served on the Editorial Board for the Annals of Psychotherapy, a journal published by the American Psychotherapy Association. In addition, she served as an Adjunct Professor in Webster University’s graduate counseling program.

Ms. Coons’ schedule allows for daytime and early evening appointments Monday through Friday. She is in the main Wilmington center on College Road on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, at the Harbor United Methodist center on Thursday and at the Supply center on Friday.

Ann Gilchrist as LCMHC-A

Ann Gilchrist holds a Masters in Counseling with Liberty University and is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate. Her focus is on individuals, 18 years old and up in the areas of anxiety, stress management, depression, & grief. Ann’s strengths lie in her personal qualities of compassion and empathy for others. She genuinely cares for people and strives to offer effective tools to overcome their struggles and maintain wellness goals. Daytime appointments can be scheduled with her Monday through Friday at the Wilmington office location.


Ms. Garlande Powell has her master’s in social work and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed School Social Worker, a Licensed Clinical Abuse Specialist, Certified Clinical Supervisor, Internationally Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Internationally Certified Clinical Supervisor. She began her social work career in group homes in North Carolina, worked in the geriatrics field as a nursing home social worker, and then transitioned to a social work case manager of children and adults with developmental disabilities. She later moved to school social work before accepting a substance abuse screening position at the local department of social services. Ms. Powell also served as an adjunct professor for East Carolina University and later went into private practice. She currently serves the New Hanover County area providing supervision to LCSWAs and LCASAs. Ms. Powell was appointed by Governor Pat McCroy in 2014, and reappointed by Governor Roy Cooper in 2017, to the North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board. She is currently serving as chair of this board. She believes that God has called her to this work, and she has a passion for helping others restore their souls to health and peace.

Ms. Powell’s normal work hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. She does not prescribe medications but is not opposed to them as needed. She uses many therapeutic models within her practice, including: cognitive-behavioral therapy, goal-oriented therapy, person-centered therapy, pragmatic therapy, reality therapy, gestalt therapy and other therapies. She looks forward to walking with you on this journey towards healing and peace.

Kimberly Steed MA, LCMHC

Kimberly Steed has established Wilmington CareNet’s first co-located counseling practice within Brunswick Family Medical Center in Shallotte, N.C. She specializes in family therapy but also works with individuals ranging in age from three through senior adulthood, who are struggling with anxiety, depression and phase-of-life issues. Ms. Steed earned an MA in agency counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She has previous experience as an Intensive Family Preservation Social Worker and Director of Transition Services with Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina. She has also worked as a therapist with Evergreen Health Services, Family Alternatives, Inc. and Modern Wellness, all in Whiteville, N.C.

Ms. Steed’s schedule allows for appointments on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at the Brunswick Family Medical Center clinic in Shallotte.

D. Jan Storey, MEd, MA, LCMHC

Jan Storey’s clinical work focuses on strengthening relationships (pre-marital, marital, parent-child, etc.), depression, anxiety, grief, adjustment, phase-of-life, and personal faith. He utilizes a cognitive approach to therapy in order to explore the relationships between thought patterns, emotions and behavioral choices. Client-centered and narrative therapy components are utilized as well. Emphasis is placed on the development of conceptual frameworks as tools for the management of thought processes, and subsequently for the management of emotional and behavioral responses. Mr. Storey earned both an MEd in administration and an MA in Christian counseling. He is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and is ordained by the American Evangelistic Association. He has worked with individuals and families for over 35 years, including 14 years with Lower Cape Fear Juvenile Services. He is the former Director of Pitt Regional Juvenile Services in Greenville, N.C.

Mr. Storey’s schedule allows for daytime and early evening appointments at the Wilmington College Road clinic, Mondays through Thursdays; and the Jacksonville clinic on Fridays.

Bonnie Prevatte
Office Administrator

Bonnie Prevatte joined Wilmington CareNet Counseling in February of 2015. With over 30 years in customer relations and office procedures/management, she brings an extensive background in insurance, claims processing, information and records management. Bonnie is also experienced in computer graphics and design, and is knowledgeable in various computer software programs.

Susan Kendall
Administrative Assistant

Susan Kendall began her employment with CareNet in April of 2021. Her cheerful personality along with her organizational skills and customer service background enable her to efficiently serve our Wilmington area offices administratively. Susan assists new and existing patients with the initial intake process, scheduling, insurance verification and documentation.
